Food Inc and King Corn

Hello all!!
So I just saw Food Inc last night and I saw King Corn on Wednesday. All I can say is GROSS and WHAT THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO EAT NOW!!!?!??!?! I was equally amazed by both films, if anything I went through the same stages I experienced while reading McKibben and Lappe. I now view the food industry in a whole new way. What are we supposed to do??? Its quite disheartening to feel like the business of food is no longer centered on sustaining and nourishing people- its about profit and mass production.

I mean who knew there is ethanol in lysol?? now all i can picture is spraying corn on everything while im "disinfecting" stuff. All I could think while watching King Corn was : we are the children of the gentically modified corn (like that movie, children of the corn-get it?) growing corn that isnt meant to be eaten and then feeding it to cows. Its ridiculous.

Have any of you seen these films yet?

  1. I have watched both the films. I think one of the most important images in King Corn (and they keep going back to it in the film) is that HUGE mountain of inedible surplus "corn". We are producing food that we can't even eat until it's processed. And not only are we genetically modifying our food supply, but we are subsidizing farmers to overproduce beyond demand in order to keep the price of "corn" down.

Personally, King Corn really struck a chord with me as an aspiring (possibly/probably documentary) filmmaker. It does such a great job of discussing/uncovering this issue -- and on such a low budget! Food, Inc. was great, too, but in a different way. It covered so many different topics that I feel a separate film could be made for each. It's like an unrelenting whirlwind of information. So, I like King Corn. I think it has the capacity to reach more audiences because it is less overwhelming and feels, to me, more relatable.

So I guess the question now is what can I make a documentary film about within this subject that I feel the world needs to know?

  2. i really like how King Corn was set up as well- i didnt feel intimidated by the information being presented to me because it just felt like two regualr guys sharing something with me. I would say to make a film about whatever is important to you- you'd be surprised to see who else would agree with your point of view :) be like nike and just do it! lol
